Dale Farm was a peaceful and well maintained Traveller site in Basildon Essex, which housed the largest community of Irish Travellers in Britain- on land they owned- on the site of a former scrapyard. Living half in legally sited homes beneath hazardous electricity pylons and half in those awaiting retrospective planning, they endured and lost an arduous 10 year legal battle to remain on the site on the 19th of October 2011. This resulted in 150 police officers storming the family site, and consequently some 400 people lost their homes in the most traumatic way. The majority of those made homeless had nowhere to go but the roadside.
